Pool Trends Making an Impact

The last few years have been about creating timeless spaces and incorporating unique features that are guaranteed to impress and make your pool stand out from the crowd.  Pools are becoming more sophisticated with bolder designs that push the boundaries of traditional pool building, transforming backyards into resort-style sanctuaries that you’ll never want to leave.

Here’s some of the latest trends to watch;

Shelf Life
The inclusion of the Baja Shelf has become a popular choice in pool design.  Providing a shallow and expansive shelf for lounging in the sun while partially submerged, it’s perfect for young children to play in and ideal for adults who prefer to relax and sip on something cold!   If you’re looking to create a resort-style vibe, in-pool furniture will add a stylish yet functional seating area within the pool so you can lie back and soak up the sun.

Acrylic Windows
Every year the SPASA Awards of Excellence showcase some of the biggest acrylic windows that have ever been seen on commercial and domestic pools.  Acrylic windows are becoming popular with pools being designed around the architecture of the property.  We have seen many pools featuring glass bottoms, viewing windows and port holes that create a sense of theatre and flood natural light into otherwise dark spaces within the home.  This pool in South Melbourne is built on a rooftop overlooking the Melbourne skyline and features a double 1200mm x 600mm acrylic windows on the floor of the pool, allowing a view to the sky from the dining room below.

It’s all About the Bubbles
The 2021 Pool of the Year featured bubbles that cascaded along the entire 20 meter acrylic wall creating a stunning visual effect. Bubblers can bring water to life and be situated in any area of the pool creating a stunning spread of bubbles and as well as looking spectacular.  The added benefit is improved water circulation helping to keep your pool crystal clear.

Elevated Pools
Hawthorn Park is Melbourne’s first sky pool suspended seven stories high, wedged between two buildings and is a staggering 18.5 meters above the ground.  This architectural feat has a glass bottom enabling pedestrians to marvel over the engineering of this impressive structure while bathers can quite literally watch the world go by beneath them.

Earthy Tones
Colour trends can reflect our desire to be closer to nature and with eucalyptus, sage green and clay browns becoming increasingly popular, these more natural tones can create a soft and serene space that is visually beautiful blending the pool area seamlessly with the landscaping.  Blending the pool and outdoor palette will create a peaceful and serene feeling to any backyard space.

Curves
Curved and Freeform pools have made a comeback over the last couple of years with many homeowners opting to create softer, more rounded spaces rather than the traditional rectangular shapes that have dominated backyards for the last 2 decades.  We’re seeing more contrasting shapes within the backyard which seems to reflect a move towards more fluid zones.  A geometric pool with a circular spa or a sunken round fire pit area can provide an interesting feature.  Backyards should be fun spaces so incorporate some personality and have some fun.

Big Form

Large format tiles have experienced a surge of popularity in recent years, and with good reason.  They offer a contemporary and elegant aesthetic that can transform any space and can provide a seamless connection from pool to the surrounding landscape.  The minimalistic modernism can create a sense of spaciousness and sophistication creating a luxe resort style vibe.  They also come with the added advantage of having less grout joints.  Having said that, looks can be deceiving as they will require a high level of skill and precision to install.
