Getting summer water balance right

When it comes to water balance, summer brings its own set of challenges.

Getting your pool’s water balance right can take bit of effort, especially in the heat and humidity of summer, where increased usage and prevailing conditions can alter your pool’s chemistry.

Evaporation

In hot and humid conditions, the rate of water evaporation from your pool's surface increases significantly. This not only leads to water loss but also affects the overall chemical balance. As water evaporates, changes in mineral levels and other dissolved solids can lead to problems like scaling and cloudy water.

Chemical imbalance

Intense sunlight and high temperatures accelerate the breakdown of chlorine and other sanitising agents. That chemical imbalance compromises the disinfection effectiveness, which promotes algal and bacterial growth. Maintaining the right chemical balance is the first step in providing safe and healthy swimming environment.

Algal growth

Hot and humid conditions make for an ideal algal breeding ground. Algae thrive in warm water, especially when the pool lacks proper circulation and sanitation. Green or cloudy water is not only unappealing but can also pose health risks, so you’ll need to get on to it quickly.

Steps to fix water balance

  1. Regular testing

Regular testing is always a good practice but summer calls for more frequent monitoring thanks to higher usage of the pool and the higher temperatures. Regularly test the pH, chlorine levels, alkalinity, and calcium hardness. If you aren’t sure how to read the results, take a sample to your local pool store or call in a certified technician.

  1. Adjusting pH and alkalinity

High temperatures can cause fluctuations in pH and alkalinity levels. Proper pH levels enhance the effectiveness of chlorine and prevent irritation to swimmers, so you’ll need to ensure that levels are within the recommended range.

  1. Shock treatment

Periodically shock the pool with a high dose of chlorine to eliminate contaminants, bacteria, and algae. This helps in restoring sanitising efficiency and prevents the growth of unwanted microorganisms.

  1. Algaecide treatment

Where algal growth persists, you might need to use an algaecide to eradicate and prevent further development. Follow the manufacturer's guidelines for dosage and application.

  1. Cover up

Using a cover will help minimise evaporation, helping you save money on chemicals and water usage.

Summer is hands-down the best season in the pool ownership calendar, so you owe it to yourself to enjoy as many hassle-free hours as you can while the weather is warm and outdoors beckon.

Maintaining proper water balance through regular testing, chemical adjustments and preventive measures will help ensure clean, clear, and safe swimming all summer long.
